This project concerns the definitive and executive design, and execution of the works, relating to the construction of a new breakwater at the Port of Genoa in the Sampierdarena area. The task of carrying out the works was entrusted to a consortium consisting of Webuild S.p.A., Fincosit S.r.l., Fincantieri Infrastructure Opere Marittime S.p.A., Società Italiana Dragaggi S.p.A. , while the design phase was assigned to a temporary grouping consisting of the studios Ramboll UK Limited and F&M Ingegneria S.p.A..

The project involves the construction of a barrier, extending 6,200 metres and located 310 meters further out to sea than the existing breakwater, resting on the seabed with variable depths of up to 50 meters.

This complex and highly innovative work will be carried out in two phases, with construction estimated to involve approximately 1,000 people.

The first phase of the works, due to be completed in 2026, involves the construction of the base at a depth of 50 metres through the addition of 7 million tonnes of rock material on which prefabricated reinforced concrete elements composed of approximately 100 cellular caissons will be positioned. The caissons will be 33 metres high, 35 metres wide and 67 metres long, similar to a 10-storey building.
The sheer scale of the works confirms the ambition of the project which, upon completing the first phase in 2026, will continue until 2030.

A budget of approximately 1.2 billion euros has been set aside for the works.

Bestmind provided Stakeholder Management, Communication Management and Design Management services in the executive design phase to support the grouping made up of F&M Ingegneria S.p.A. and Ramboll UK Limited.

The use of the Dyana platform – powered by Bestmind – was instrumental to the management of design activities, including: the coordination of different disciplines, the planning of activities, the monitoring of progress (both for individual disciplines and for the overall project), and expediting the formation and deployment of corrective actions for the delivery phases.
By providing a single platform where all stakeholders could measure, analyse and compare their activities, Dyana proved crucial in allowing all parties to reach the final objective without compromising standards or deadlines.
