The Dnipropetrovsk Metro Construction Completion Project, based in the municipality of Dnipropetrovsk in Ukraine, concerns the extension of the existing 7.8 km city metro line by an additional 4 km (wholly underground) and the construction of 3 new stations.

The 7.8 km section entered into service in 1995, while the works on the second section, which was the subject of the offer, were initially contracted out in 1995. These works made very slow progress due to lack of funds, until they were completely ceased. Prior the period to which the current project refers, works were completed for approximately 11% of the entire section. Now thanks to funds earmarked by the Ukrainian government from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank, it has been possible to re-contract and restart these works.

The siting of the project exhibits several challenges that contribute to the overall complexity of the required works.
The line proceeds at a depth that varies between 40 to 70 meters, so as to remain within the granite layers present below the overlying alluvial materials.

Groundwater is present between 4 and 5 meters below the surface, with water inflows expected of up to 80m3/hour, and demonstrating high levels of radioactivity.

The tunnels are double-barrelled and the use of TBMs is planned. Small sections, ranging from a few metres to several hundred, have already been built.

The 3 new stations are planned at depths varying between 40 and 70 meters and their construction involves excavation with traditional methods.

This entire section of the metro unfolds beneath historic buildings.

The project was governed according to the FIDIC Yellow Book contract, and whilst the prevailing language was English, employer’s requirements, drawings, price schedules and schedule of payments remained in Ukrainian.

The existing section was built on the basis of Soviet legislation and Ukrainian legislation where Soviet legislation had not been implemented.
